Vincent Van Gogh, in his painting “Oliviers avec les Alpilles en arrière-plan” (Olive trees with the Alpilles in the background), paints a pastoral scene full of dynamism and colour. This painting, produced during his stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1889, is in the tradition of Post-Impressionism.

In the lower half of the canvas, an olive orchard speckled with green and yellow catches the eye. The twisting, energetic olive trunks bring a sense of movement to the whole, like the heartbeat of the land of Provence. On the horizon, the Alpilles mountains rise up, majestic and soothing, creating a dividing line between the tumult of the vegetation and the calm of the sky.
