Vincent Van Gogh painted one of his most poignant works in Arles: The Self-Portrait with a Bandaged Ear. This painting follows an episode of which it is an account: the gesture by which he cut off his ear with a razor. With his features drawn, his jaw clenched and his eyes lost in the distance, an impression of resignation and appeasement emanates from this post-impressionnist work. The artist has juxtaposed colors close to each other on the color wheel that form a harmony of analogy, they combine without clashing.
