The work displays, by its monumental format (267x406cm) and its iconographic wealth, the ambitions of Robert Delaunay. The composition is read from left to right, like a collage. On the left, the harbor landscape evokes the memory of a self-portrait by Henri Rousseau, entitled “Moi-même” (“Myself”). And on the right, the red Eiffel Tower is a self-quotation by the artist, referring to his other works on the theme. The different parts of the composition are unified by the surface effect of the shimmering planes, which make the shapes disappear into the colour.
