This expressionnist work is the central panel of a three-part painting called ‘The Departure’. Created in Germany shortly after Adolf Hitler’s accession to power, the triptych reflects Max Beckmann’s sense of uncertainty, as the Nazi regime described his art as ‘degenerate’. His figures embark on a journey into the unknown, like the painter who is about to go to the Netherlands to escape the Third Reich.
